Anime Films at Oscars 2016

omoide no marnieThe completed list of all projects submitted for the upcoming nominations in this year’s Oscars are here, and we do see three anime film in it! Omoide no Marnie by Studio Ghibli, Bakemono no Ko by Mamoru Hosoda and UFO Gakuen no Himitsu by HS Pictures are the three Japanese titles to note among the list of worldwide animated projects.
See the complete list below, with a small info about how projects are in fact approved for the Oscars.

To be eligible for the Oscars, each project must have been released within the previous year. Hence, since the upcoming ceremony will award the best titles of 2015, it is called “Oscars 2016”. This is one of the main characteristics when it comes to approving a title during the submission process.

When Marnie Was There


There are a number of countries represented including Brazil, Japan and the US. Popular actress Salma Hayek also participates in the list with her own project The Prophet. On 14th January, we will come to know who made the cut for the nominations, hopeful that at least one anime will enter the final list. Naturally, this wouldn’t guarantee it the acknowledgement, though. Who will receive the statuette, we will see on 28th February during the official ceremony.

  1. Bakemono no Ko is a very good anime, having in mind what is currently offered… Still, I don’t think any of the three is a serious contender. It will be either Minions or Inside Out.
