SUMMER ANIME SEASON 2014 PREVIEW: TOKYO GOUL (東京喰種-トーキョーグール-) Gods? Demons? What are Ghouls and where did they come from? How can humanity fight such a devastating species and will it succeed without becoming like the enemy? These are the questions that the humans in this story will ask themselves… or you will, when you become a part of it as well. Yet, the biggest threat is humanity itself.

The anime adaptation of Sui Ishida’s Tokyo Ghoul (Tokyo Kushi) manga will air on 3rd July 2014.

Are you ready for what’s coming?

Red eyes, a taste for coffee and unable to eat any human food – this is the general description of a Tokyo ghoul. They are babies, teenagers, adults and elderly; they are boys and girls; with either human-like or beast-like looks.

So, you know the general definition, now let’s check out the main characters of the show… in detail.
Ken, Touka and Rise’s fates were suddenly chained together.

Ken Kaneki

This is the very main character in the show. Not aiming to spoil anything, but he’s the typical shounen hero – has something from both sides in him. This said, his life suddenly changes from a normal college boy’s to a supernatural and quite abnormal. Nonetheless, love, friendship and sometimes even drama ends-up being quite the same in the ghoul world as it is in the human.

Touka Kirishima

Here we’re facing one of the favourite type of characters in anime – the silent, apathetic and very able one. And a girl. Touka is an experienced fighter, an agile athlete and someone who can, without any effort, beat-up a man. Apart from her excessive abilities, this young waitress at the special café is also very pretty. In her past, however, there is a secret, hidden very deep in her family. Will it come out in the anime? hopefully.

Rise Kamishiro (Please note, I am using the spelling provided by the official website of the show)

Rise is another frightening girl from the Tokyo Ghoul universe. While everyone in the area knows her as a fearful enemy, the girl is a pretty, calm and charming. With her friends, although a few, she is one of the best people on the planet, but when it comes to feeding and hunting, she’s unmatched in power. The fact that she managed to put two areas under her dominion speaks for itself.

There are some secondary characters who will surely show-up in the show. Scroll down for some additional information on them alongside who will be their seiyuu!

Sora Amamiya (Blade & Soul’s Hazuki Jin) as Touka Kirishima

Kana Hanazawa (Black Rock Shooter’s title character, Zetsuen no Tempest’s Aika Fuwa) as Rise Kamishiro
A strange coffee house, the ever-beloved boy with the odd hobbies, a curious student and a couple of weird detectives… This is just part of what Tokyo Ghoul will bring!

Mamoru Miyano (Durarara’s Masaomi Kida, Free!’s Rin Matsuoka) as Shuu Tsukiyama

Also known as Gourmet MM, Shuu is a ghoul with special food preferences. He’s also a famous member of the underground clubs and often visits a ghoul gourmet restaurant.

Takayuki Sugou (Bleach’s Zangetsu, Naruto’s Hashirama Senju) as Yoshimura

Yoshimura-san is the owner of the Anteiku Café. He’s also the person who takes care of Touka and Ken. Morohoshi (No. 6’s Lili, Kuragehime’s Clara) as Hinami Fueguchi

The youngest guest of the Anteiku. Ghoul investigators hunted down both her parents. Her mother was murdered right in front of her.

Katsuyuki Konishi (D.Gray-man’s Komui Lee, Durarara!!’s Tom Tanaka) as Koutarou Amon

Amon-kun is a newly-appointed ghoul investigator. He wields a massive weapon and can easily win against most ghouls.

There is still no seiyuu for his veteran partner Kureo Mado – the mad ghoul-hunter.

Yuuichi Nakamura (Break Blade OVA’s Hodr, Clannad’s Tomoya Okazaki) as Renji Yomo

A good friend of Yoshimura and his right-hand man. He helps with all things-Anteiku, including the recovery of corpses for meals.

Toshiyuki Toyonaga (Durarara!!’s Mikado Ryuugamine, Zetsuen no Tempest’s Mahiro Fuwa) as Hideyoshi Nagachika

He’s not a ghoul, but has a super-intuition. He’s also Ken’s best friend.

Shintaro Asanuma (Phi Brain’s Kaito Daimon, Yu Gi Oh!’s Crow Hogan) as Nishiki Nishio

Nishiki is one of the strongest ghouls in the district (and maybe further). He’s also a senior student in Ken’s school.

Takahiro Sakurai (.hack//’s Haseo, Berserk movie’s Griffith) as Uta

Uta is a strong ghoul, but you won’t see him fight much. He’s an artist – he creates the masks most ghouls use when they go hunting. Once, he and Yomo were enemies, but now they’re friends.

The OP will be performed by Ling Tosite Sigure’s TK (Toru Kitajima). It’s entitled “Unravel”

The ED is “Seijatachi” and will be performed by People in the Box. This is the band’s first project in anime.

    1. I also hope for new series to enjoy. :) I like the dark vibe from the PV and hope for a good story, as I am not familiar with the manga.
