Zetsuen no Tempest is one of the most anticipated anime of this season. With its romantic tale of trust and betrayal as well as a bit of a twist when it comes to the love lives and relationships of the main characters, it is no wonder almost everyone is thinking this will be a hit series! Even more – titles such as Sword of the Stranger and Le Chevalier D’Eon are among the former projects of the staff members.
The show revolves around an upcoming apocalypse and the possible way to stop it that a young student has found. His name is Mahiro Fuwa and he stumbled upon the truth behind what is going on in his world while trying to find the man behind his sister’s ‘suicide’. Having discovered a message in a bottle which brought him together with what is known as the most powerful witch, he is going to not only avenge his sister, but also save the world. He is aided by his best friend Yoshino Takigawa and the powerful memory of his sister. The two young men will have to fight against another one of the strongest underworld magicians and on top of this, without even having any background on him and what he is able to do. One thing they know is that they need to stop him from collecting all the eyes from the world and also – find the witch before it is too late.
There are some minor setbacks for the general public, though. One of them is the incest idea… or more likely what is incest? If two people are brought up as siblings are they in the wrong to be together? There are some issues that might come up with this anime, but whoever is okay with Mawaru Penguindrum – there will be no problem with Zetsuen no Tempest as well, though the topic is suggested and not certain.
I admit it, I haven’t read all of Shirohara-sensei’s manga and cannot spill too many beans about the development of the show. I can, however, give my two cents for what might come out of this show.
Animation and graphics: There is definitely something really good coming to us when it comes to this show. Definitely a type of eye-candy and I am hoping these expectations of mine, product of the released-by-now trailers and images, won’t be betrayed.
Story: The idea of Zetsuen no Tempest is very nice and having a very strong witch in a disadvantage, helped just by a young man with no own magical abilities whatsoever. Lots of betrayals and under-the-table card exchange is expected, but will it work in an animated version when the manga is still not as advanced? We’ll have to hope not to witness another Soul Eater (“Courage!”), Ao no Exorcist or Pandora Hearts – just a few examples of good stories – just a few examples of good stories gone bad because of a too-in-advance adaptation. What I am mostly afraid is that they will make this show too lovey-dovey and not look into the destruction factor enough. We have plenty of moe and romance anime, bring back apocalypse!
Music: This is going to sound pretty silly, but I hope that it won’t be very disappointing when incorporated in the story. What will become of me once I start liking this kind of music? Will I turn sparkly as an innovation? No idea, but Zetsuen no Tempest’s take on classical music has turned out pretty well and I believe it suits the apocalyptic character of the so-called “civilization blaster”. Michiru Oshima-san is definitely doing a good job for now.

The main characters in this story are, as previously stated, two young men, a pretty witch and a dead girl. They are, however, confronted by the anti-hero – an evil sorcerer. Is the lone wolf in the story, an able action-loving woman, going to help the boys or not? That is one question, the answer of which will become known once we watch the show.
Mahiro Fuwa is the key element in everything. He is the one who starts t seek underneath the common and he is also the one who gets to ‘meet’ the deserted female magician. He uses magical items in order to reach the highest powered male magician and not only take revenge for his family and sister, but also save the world by stopping the man from reviving a deadly legend.
Hakaze Kusaribe is also known as the Princess is a Magician of Beginning and is granted the special task to guard the Tree of Beginnings. She is the most evolved sorcerer in the world and a danger to the very head of the Kusaribe clan. She is the only chance for humanity to stop the dreadful epidemic that turns humans into iron figures, an after effect of that same clan leader’s ambition to revive an ancient evil.
Yoshino Takigawa is an absolutely normal young schoolboy who is a best friend with Mahiro and had a secret affair with his sister. He is quite a lot like his friend and we will be seeing how his character changes throughout the anime.
Aika Fuwa was Mahiro’s sister and Yoshino’s secret lover. It was her very death that turned the lives of both boys upside down. She was also in love with her brother while alive, but it seems like nothing has happened.
The main antagonist is Hakaze’s former aid in the clan – Samon Kusaribe (the red-haired man). He’s currently occupying the position of a leader in this magic clan. His idea is to awaken the so-called Tree of Zetsuen (from Japanese 絶 “zetsuen” – absolute/ discontinue, abstain, interrupt, suppress and 園”en” – garden, yard). In order to do this, he needs to gather at a specific place huge, dreadful items, getting them out of their lairs and bringing them to the needed location inflicts a dreadful disease to the people – their whole bodies turn into lifeless statues. If you’re wondering what’s with all the butterflies – well, don’t expect me to tell you everything! Some humans will hate me for bringing up even that much of a recap of the story.
