The proposed U.S. legislation (SOPA/PIPA) threatens us all. This freedom-limiting project is going to allow the US government to sneak and block, ban and sue site owners for copyrighted materials no matter where the site is located. Yes, you heard me right –  every quote on Wikipedia that is not paid for, every anime screenshot that hasn’t been paid for, every movie citation, song lyric, any small amount of copyrighted material will be charged with ban, trial and much more. There will be no online encyclopedias, personal blogs or AMV (after all, the music in them is licensed). Moreover, every owner of such postings can be sued by the US Government.

On January 18, 2012, sites all over the internet will be blacking out to protest and try to mobilize more people to speak out against this bill coming up in the Senate next week — S. 968: the Protect IP Act (PIPA) — in an attempt to let U.S. lawmakers know how much opposition there is. WordPress.org, Wikipedia, and even WordPress.com VIP I Can Has Cheezburger? will be participating in the blackout to raise awareness and spur you to action.

ShinigamiList, although a small anime and manga site, is also joining in for everyone matters in this issue. You can also join by sharing on Twitter, Facebook and whatever other social media you are a member of. This should be heard of and not ignored.
