Mecha, sci-fi, fantasy, action, drama, comedy and romance… “Aquarion Evol” is actually the sequel of “Sousei no Aquarion” that was aired April-September 2005. The new series will debut in January 2012. This time two producers from the staggering 6 behind the first instalment – Satelight and Media Factory – are joined by 8bit. They will make possible the anime realization of the story by Shoji Kawamori, who’ll also direct it.
The original characters are conceptualized by mangaka Chinatsu Kurahana and Kana Ishida, who created animation for episodes of titles such as “Code Geass”, “Cowboy Bebop”, “Sword of the Stranger”, “Mobile Suit Gundam”, “Rozen Maiden”, “Naruto” and many more. Kana-san is also the designer of the anime characters, this time together with Hiroki Marufuji.
According to official sources, the new series will tell a story that is happening 12 000 years after the original fight between the Fallen Angel Clan’s “Shadow Angels” and the mythical robot weapon Aquarion. The characters, cast and Aquarion robot will be entirely new, while the city that the action is taking place in is modeled after modern day Hong Kong. The only information original creator Kawamori gave so far is that the lead characters of “Aquarion Evol” could be the reincarnated Appolo and Silvia De Alisia form the initial anime adaptation. He also hinted on a debut by some outer-dimension enemies.
You can also see the released trailers, who hint how dramatic the anime will be:
Hit? An alternative ongoing mecha anime, other than “Mobile Suit Gundam”, who’s created by the man who once designed mechanics for “Ghost in the Shell”, “Eureka Seven” and the “Macross” franchise. Mind all that, if you’re a fan of the original franchise, you’ll be most definitely happy to see what’s more to happen, as well as get to know the new protagonists and antagonists….
Miss? No reason really. If you don’t like girls and robots (girls in robots), you’re probably not a mecha fan anyway. Of course, there’s a possibility that people who’ve seen and disliked the first series won’t have another look or on the contrary – those who loved it, might find the “reincarnation” idea a tad too off. I still believe the producers got those covered, though…
