All-time TOP 5 Mecha Anime

Voltron, Gundam and whatnot – a lot of strange machines are running wild across the globe. Read below for the all-time best mecha anime as rated by the real people (All statistics are taken from the current My Anime List information, rates are given by people who have seen the particular anime and there is no manipulation by Shinigami-sama!!!)
Everybody knows what mecha anime are – they are shows where mechanical beasts are acting as fighting units and are, in one way or another, controlled by the humans in order to either achieve greatness and world domination or defeat the ones who aim at this.

Although a lot of mecha anime have been shown all over the globe, there are several ones that strike as the absolute winners in such a category, at least when it comes to the fans’ opinion. I will show you the top 5 mecha anime according to the current My Anime List webpage’s rankings and give my opinion on the matter. I do hope that no one gets offended by what I am going to say, since I am not going to be very nice… However, would you dare standing up to the Shinigami?
Let the countdown begin…

5. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Movie: Lagann-hen
The remake (also known as alternative version) of the original animated series for Gurrenn Lagann that was released in 2007. Loved, just as the original.

4. Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch
Oh, Lelouch! How much the anime community loves you and your maniacal ways to greatness! This is the anime that really changed the world and turned mecha famous and popular again. Code Geass is the child of some of the greatest anime around. It has the mecha of Gundam and Voltron(if you’d like), the Action of the typical shounen, the bishounen of every single crow-pleaser, the mind-games of Death Note… What can we all want more? (Okay, maybe Lelouch needs to gain some weight…)

3. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
The Gurren Lagann… what can I say?! No wonder it’s here – everyone loves it and everyone has at least one good thing to say about it. Even though it is from the Fall 2007 season, this anime brings back the real anime in the industry and it does it with passion.

2. Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance
Evangelion… taking the all-time,all-genre spot of no.8 in the MAL rankings, it is hardly any wonder it will be in the top positions of the mecha genre. It is a great thing that an anime not as mainstream as Evangelion managed to muster as much powers as it was necessary to turn the world of anime into an Evangelion fan. (SHinigami sama’s preoccupied with the repeating of the title here… O.o). This new season of the popular series is ranked almost 90 places higher than its prequel. This shows that at least in Japan, people do know how to make sequels!

1. Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch R2
And here we are, Lelouch managed to win the eternal battle with everyone, even though being as young as 2008. The anime…well, everyone knows what it is about, everyone has heard of the evil laugh this young man can manage. What makes the Shinigami wonder about this position is how can this be twice in the top position and not a Gundam (who are not even in the list!!!) when everyone talks all about the gundams? Could looks matter more than tradition and innovation?

All in all, there are several ponderous things around this chart. First one is the fact that there is no Gundam (!!!) in the top 5 of mecha anime. I am starting to wonder if the franchise was really as good as its fans make it look and if they have as many fans as it seems or they are just making multiple accounts… The second thing is a bit vaster – the fact that the top 3 of mecha anime are found in the top 10 of all genres should lead to only one conclusion – mecha anime are either very good or very mainstream.

Considering the fact that I am not a great fan of this genre, and I do know many who are like me, and yet, I would rate some of them very high (when I actually finish them) is enough to prove that mainstream is not the case. And the third one is… 2xLelouch? Really.. is it that good? I mean okay, psychology and stuff, but putting this in front of other mechas I do consider better makes me wonder if it’s not the case of people-wanting-to-give-high-ratings-to-every-installment-of-their-liked-anime?

  1. Code Geass and tengen toppa are ok but not in all time list .But then again this might be all time list mecha anime for newer generations.

    1. I am also shocked about Gundams… Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn is 6th, though… still not as good as I expected. Also, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG is 7th, but I am not very keen on the results of this research of mine as a whole.
