One of the very few cases in which a Studio Ghibli member is occupying him or herself with a TV anime series was announced earlier today. Goro Miyazaki will be directing an adaptation of Astrid Lindgren’s Ronia the Robber’s Daughter (Ronja Rövardotter) translated in Japanese as 山賊のむすめローニャ (Sanzoku no Musume Ronya).
The story of this book revolves around Ronia – the only daughter of a master bandit. Her father, Mattis, is the bandit of bandits, the main thief in one of the biggest such groups in the book’s universe. Their hiding spot is deep in the woods, in a previously forgotten and abandoned castle. While his people live by the art of thievery, the young girl explores the forest and all the creatures that occupy it.
This book focuse son the family, on the relationship with both others and Mother Nature and with this, it is by no means a surprise Ghibli has decided to adapt it into an anime.
Director Miyazaki commented that his “goal is to create a work that everyone, from children to adults, will be able to enjoy.”
Apart from the director, we also came to know the series’ composer – Hiroyuki Kawasaki whose latest project on this position was Shinrei Tantei Yakumo.
The series will be completely 3D CG and will start this autumn.
