ANIME SEASON FALL 2013 PREVIEW: DIABOLIK LOVERS (ディアボリックラヴァーズ)

diabolik loversIdea Factory’s Diabolik Lovers is one of the first anime series of this year’s autumn season. With several bishounen characters and a bishoujo in the centre of their lives, this upcoming anime will surely appeal to the lovers of otome games and their anime versions. It is an adaptation of Rejet’s original otome visual novel. Watch out for its first episode, coming just a couple of days from today – on 16th September!

The visual novel by Rejet focuses on the life of six vampire siblings and a young human girl who ends up living with them. While they go to school and take care of their own family-related issues, their lives are also centres around the fresh blood in the mansion. So, how does the young Yui move into this mansion filled with sadistic and weird boys? Well, because of her father’s work, she needs to transfer to their very school for celebrities and entertainers.

Adaptation of this game is handed over to Shinobu Tagashira. He has worked on various projects and in many positions including key animator, character designer and storyboard artist. His past projects include Shounen Onmyouji, Steamboy, Monster, Kore wa Zombie desu ka? and more notable anime series.

Here is the official trailer for the show, presenting us the main characters and including some beautiful and cheeky scenes from this fall 2013 anime.

Here is the list of people and companies who have made this anime reality:

Original Idea: Idea Factory, Otomate, Rejet

Original Characters: Satoi

Director: Shinobu Tagashira

Series Composition: Seiko Nagatsu

Character Design: Yahiro Yuuko

Music: Yuki Hayashi

Animation Production: Zexcs

Production: DIABOLIK LOVERS PROJECT

This time, I tried to find you all information about not only the characters, but also the seiyuu. Please note that, due to the adult content of the original visual novel and because I got the info on the characters from it, there might be some minor differences with what is to come in the anime. I suppose the level of violence and sexual content will be much lower in the series.

diabolik lovers characters
The characters in Diabolik Lovers: Yui and the Sakamaki brothers (from left to right) Ayato, Knato, Laito, Shuu, Reiji and Subaru.

Yui Komori to be played by Rie Suegara (centre)

Yui Komori is the series’ main character. She is the daughter of a church-owner and was made to move into a huge mansion where six mysterious boys live. On top of this sudden change of ambiance, what she does not know is that all sic of them are vampires.

Suegara-chan is a debutant seiyuu.

Ayato Sakamaki to be played by Hikaru Midorikawa

He, Kanato and Laito are triplets. He is the youngest of the three. Because of past problems, caused by his mother Cordelia, Ayato has grown to be very competitive and striving to be the best in everything he does. He also has an odd hobby – torturing devices.

Midorikawa-san is the seiyuu of Lancer (Fate/Zero), Tamahome (Fushigi Yuugi), Reinhard von Lohengramm (Legend of the Galactic Heroes) and more.

Kanato Sakamaki to be played by Yuki Kaji

This is the second youngest triplet. He is a problem child as he is very spoilt, fighting with all means for what he wants. He is very emotional and always brings his teddy bear along.

Kaji-san is a popular seiyuu because of his roles as Haruyuki Arita (Accel World), Konekomaru Miwa (Ao no Exorcist), Shu Ouma (Guilty Crown) and more.

Laito Sakamaki to be played by Daisuke Hirakawa

The eldest triplet, Laito Sakamaki is very violent and an extreme sadist and masochist. His character is very abusive and sexually aggressive, also towards Yui. He often is suspended from school as well.

Having participated as minor characters in some of the biggest names in the otaku world (Bleach, Naruto, Yu-Gi-Oh! and Hunter x Hunter), Hirakawa-san’s main roles are also very notable: Suguru Oomi (Hiiro no Kakera), Itou Makoto (School Days) and more.

Shuu Sakamaki to be played by Kousuke Toriumi

This is the oldest Sakamaki sibling and the master of the mansion. Unlike the triplets, he is the child of Beatrice. Lazy, apathetic and uninterested in anything that happens around him. He always listens to music and is mostly found in the music room at school.

Toriumi-san is known as the voice of crazy characters Szayel Aporro Grantz (Beach) and Girge (Break Blade), as well as Kiba Inuzuka (Naruto).

Reiji Sakamaki to be played by Katsuyuki Konishi

Reiji is the other child of Karl’s wife Beatrice. He is the second oldest son of his father and is a control-freak, resulting in sadist tendencies. He is the most responsible in the mansion and also very jealous of Shuu’s position (being the eldest of all).

Konishi-san has many roles in shounen (Bleach’s Shuuhei Hisagi, D.Gray-Man’s Komui Lee and Fairy Tail’s Laxus Dreyar), but his roles in shoujo anime series are also notable (Cardcaptor Sakura’s Yoshiyuki  Terada and Spinel Sun).

Subaru Sakamaki to be played by Takashi Kondo

This is Krista’s only son and he is the youngest of the six children of Karl. He is a loner and doesn’t get along with any of his brothers. He is not the usual sweet boy, but can sometimes be exactly this type of person. Usually, however, he is quite aggressive and often breaks things in angry fits.

Kondo-san is the actor behind Silver Bullet (Zettai Karen Children), Ariabert Tytania (Tytania) and Kyoya Hibari (Katekyo Hitman Reborn!).

More like every otome adaptation…but I see your point – at least “Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge” (“Wallflower”) and “Ouran Highschool Host Club” took it to the next level and added some sense to the senseless fan service…
