The Rose of Versailles Manga Returns after 40 Years

the rose of versaillesThe 50th anniversary of Shueisha’s Margaret magazine will bring a smile to the older shoujo readers around the globe. Riyoko Ikeda will be drawing and writing a 16-page one-shot part of the Rose of Versailles classic historical manga. The chapter will be published as a part of the special Anniversary Book celebrating Margaret’s 50th birthday.

The Rose of Versailles tells the story of a young girl in the court of Queen Marie Antoinette. Lady Oscar has been trained and raised as a man in order to serve the revolution. In the new chapter, we will observe some events in the life of Andre – his childhood and the time before he met with Oscar.
Incredible artwork, unique stories and incredible characters – these are the reasons many people brand this work the best of its genre.

The return of the Rose, although just for a one-shot, comes after as many as 40 years as the story was published from 1972 to 1973. This was when the Margaret was still a weekly edition.

Hmm… Beautiful art, but I can’t find myself feeling excited about it. Not really my style. Perfect Blue on the other hand (the other news of today) – totally.

The best news is it’s all made by Ikeda-sama :) I am not really an avid Shoujo fan but “La Rose de Versailles” is a classic, e.g. it was Shoujo before it was cool, which wins my respect ;) I am sure a lot of people will appreciate it :)
