Famous director and Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata‘s new project has been announced! The title of the upcoming movie is Kaguya-hime no Monogatari (The Story of Princess Kaguya) and it is based on a popular Japanese folktale. The movie will come out in the summer of 2013, on the same day as Kaze Tachinu.
The basis of the upcoming film is one traditional Japanese folktale. The story of “The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter” tells us of an old bamboo seller and how one day, while cutting the plant in order to sell it, he finds something that will change his life forever. The thing inside of the bamboo stick is the young Kaguya-hime, a princess that is the size of a human thumb. As the girl grows and matures, she receives a lot of attention and soon, she is facing a tough decision – which one out of the five husbands-to-be she should choose to live her life with.
The young Kaguya decides to face them with a challenge – whoever brings her the best wedding present, she will love him for eternity. While the five men are looking everywhere for that perfect gift, a new prospective husband appears – the Emperor himself.
